Clarinet in A, fixed media and live processing [8-channel surround] ~ 10 min.
i couldn’t see you from afar (a.k.a. simple spaces) uses spatial illusions and allusions as abstracted musical elements. The sound of the live instrument is fed through multiple delay lines and ring modulators, the parameters of which are partially controlled by the clarinet’s sound. Outputs are then individually spatialised and processed by a multi-channel reverb. The combination of delays, ring modulation, and reverb are meant to slightly distort the sound of the instrument, accentuating its expressive features while at the same time projecting it in a vast, surreal space. In addition to live processing, multi-channel sound files are used to reinforce spatial illusions, in dialog with—and sometimes in opposition to—the live performer. i couldn’t see you from afar (a.k.a. simple spaces) is dedicated to Ilana, without whom this music would not have been possible.
i couldn’t see you from afar (a.k.a. simple spaces) was completed in Montreal in March 2025. It was first performed by Ilana Inselbuch on clarinet and Lorenzo Paniconi on live electronics at McGill University on April 17, 2025.
